Joint Statement from Speaker Don Scott and Senator Louise Lucas on Sudden Federal Grant Cancellation Hurting Portsmouth Students
Richmond, VA – Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Don Scott and Senator Louise Lucas released the following statement regarding the Elizabeth River Project’s sudden loss of a $75,000 federal grant and the impact on Portsmouth students:
“The sudden loss of this grant—ripped away without warning, halfway through a three-year commitment—is yet another example of the chaos caused by Trump and Republican leadership’s reckless approach to governing. Their deep cuts to federal funding have already hurt our veterans, slashed healthcare access, and gutted vital community programs. Now, they’re targeting our kids—taking away resources that Portsmouth’s sixth graders rely on for field trips, learning new skills, and gaining experiences that will better prepare them for the future.
“We are working closely with our House and Senate committees to track the impacts of these federal funding cuts as they continue to come quickly and without warning. With the facts from these committees, we will be better prepared to respond in the Virginia General Assembly. But make no mistake: these cuts are harmful. Our best investment is an investment into our future—our children—and giving them the tools and experiences they need in order to succeed.”
