Don Scott Re-Elected Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates
RICHMOND, VA – Today, the Virginia House of Delegates unanimously re-elected Don Scott to serve another term as Speaker, continuing a historic chapter in the Commonwealth’s legislative leadership.
In 2024, Speaker Scott was elected the first Black Speaker in Virginia’s 406-year history. First time a Virginia Speaker is serving back to back terms since Speaker Howell in 2018.
His re-election reflects the House’s continued confidence in his leadership as the General Assembly begins a new legislative session.
Following the vote, Speaker Scott spoke about the responsibility of the office and the enduring purpose of the House of Delegates:
“When I first picked up this gavel, I said I wasn’t holding it for myself. That remains true today. I hold it for the next generation – for the next Virginian who will live in a better Commonwealth than the one we know today because of the work we do in this chamber. For the people who may never know our names, but whose lives will be shaped by the choices we make here. That is the responsibility of this House.”
Speaker Scott underscored the responsibility entrusted to the House of Delegates and the importance of steady, thoughtful leadership as the General Assembly begins its work. Looking ahead, Speaker Scott stressed the importance of governing with discipline and purpose, and of honoring the trust Virginians have placed in their elected representatives.
