Richmond, VA – In case you missed it, yesterday, Speaker Don Scott delivered a moving and deeply personal commencement address to the graduating Class of 2025 at Hampton University, one of the nation’s premier historically Black universities. In his speech, Speaker Scott urged students to embrace their struggles as opportunities for growth and to carry the legacy of their institution with pride and purpose.
“Tough times are not your enemy, they are your teacher. They show you what you’re made of and push you to become the person you’re meant to be.”
In a speech filled with emotion, wisdom, and humor, Speaker Scott shared his extraordinary journey from growing up and being raised by a single mother, to being convicted for drug conspiracy charges in law school, to becoming a partner at a law firm, to ultimately becoming the first Black Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates in its 405-year history.
“I made a mistake, but I made up my mind—I wouldn’t let that be the end of my story. The most powerful thing on this planet is a made-up mind.”
Scott encouraged graduates to never forget where they come from and to carry the legacy of Hampton University—"Home by the Sea"—with them. He paid tribute to the powerful legacy of Hampton University, its alumni, and its central role in American history.
“Your legacy is strong. And during these adverse times remember this university. Its legacy. Its power. Its place in history. These trailblazers—their struggles, their triumphs, their stories—are part of your story now. Hampton is in you.
“So when you step into the world, carry with you the legacy of Hampton—the spirit of purpose, pride, and excellence. Your style, your hair, your genius are global inspirations. So, when you enter spaces not designed for you, don’t feel the need to change your voice, hide your story, or conform to stereotypes others try to impose. The world wants your swag. Never dim your light.”
Speaker Scott’s address was especially meaningful on Mother’s Day, as he honored his wife, Dr. Mellanda Colson Scott—a proud Hampton alumna—and all mothers in the audience for the roles they play in shaping futures.
“Graduates, family is everything. And let’s be honest—they deserve a lot of the credit for getting you here – especially our moms. We don’t go through this world alone, we have our family helping lift us up every step of the way.”
The address concluded with a call to action:
“Class of 2025, your future is calling you to something greater. Let go of the fear of failure. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, support you, and hold you accountable. And above all—never stop dreaming big. The next chapter isn’t just about surviving. It’s about thriving. ”
For Speaker Don Scott, whose life story embodies redemption, resilience, and relentless determination, his message to the Class of 2025 was clear: don’t let your past define you, remember where you came from, and never dim your light.
